What Is MIPS In A Snow Helmet?

MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) provides an added layer of protection against rotational forces during an accident in many types of helmets, including snow helmets. These rotational forces can otherwise cause serious injury to your brain.

The MIPS layer inside your helmet helps to reduce the rotational motion and in doing so reduces the sudden jolt to your brain during an impact. It is that short, sharp jolt that can cause serious damage to your brain.

MIPS works by using a slip-plane system which can move slightly within the helmet during a fall. This means less force is transferred to your head which minimizes the risk of concussion or other injuries. As a result, MIPS helmets provide significantly higher levels of protection than helmets without the MIPS system.

The best thing to know about ski helmets with MIPS is that they are not just for skiing, but for snowboarding as well.

Safety Certification For Snow Helmets

There is no mandatory standard for ski and snowboard helmets in the United States, however, there is the voluntary standard of ASTM F2040 for snow helmet certification. Also widely accepted in the United States and numerous other countries is the European standard, CE-EN1077.

You would be well advised to avoid buying a cheap nameless brand with no certification. Ski and snowboarding helmets with MIPS as well as ASTM or CE-EN certification are available at very reasonable prices nowadays.

Before you buy your new snow helmet, always check that it conforms to one of these two standards, so that you can ski or snowboard with peace of mind and have a memorable vacation.

Choosing A Snow Helmet

Once you’ve found a nice looking snowboard helmet with MIPS and a properly recognized certification, we come to what is probably the most important thing to look for. A helmet that fits your head properly.

A ski helmet that is too small will be uncomfortable and you won’t want to wear it. A ski helmet that it too big may wobble around and can even catch the breeze as you pick up speed on a downhill run. But, even worse, it could even slip off your head if you have a collision.

It’s very important that your ski helmet fits snugly and is comfortable. If the helmet does not fit comfortably, then it cannot provide adequate protection.

Snow Helmet Ventilation

One of the most overlooked pieces of the helmet safety puzzle is adequate ventilation. The ventilation system should allow air to flow freely through the vents from front to rear while keeping your head cool and dry. But that’s not the only purpose of ventilation.

Adequate ventilation is very important in a snow helmet as well-positioned vents can help to stop your visor or goggles from fogging up.

The better known brands understand this and have this down to a fine art. They will often recommend their own brands of goggles to match the helmet, not to make you spend more, but because the goggle/ helmet combo is designed to work together.
